After he finished the Rietveld academy in 1993 Willem Harbers was invited to work at the European Ceramic Work Center (EKWC) at 's-Hertogenbosch. In 1994 he went to Italy.
There he lived and worked between the marble quarries in the mountains of Carrara and stayed for a year. Since then he can be found in Carrara several months a year.
His atelier, where everything starts and comes together, is now in Amsterdam and Spanbroek.
The design of his work has, for a considerable part, its origins in the production and consumption of materials. His fascination is aimed at the processes that thereby take place. The works resemble machinery or parts of industrial areas. They even make you think of machines that have been mastered by the materials it normally operates.
This reference to machine parts stands for the idea "motion". Movement or processes we see in nature but also in the technical field. It seems any moment the sculptures can start moving or just stopped doing so. The recognizable appearance, caused by the industrial forms, gives the work a seemingly practical usefulness. It makes the spectator reflect on the association of matter and usage.
